Learn the fundamentals of prompt engineering to get better results from ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools.
You've probably heard about “prompts” and “prompt engineering”—but what does it actually mean, and why does it matter? This guide breaks down the art of communicating effectively with AI.
A prompt is simply the text you give to an AI system. It could be a question, an instruction, or a creative starting point. The AI uses your prompt to generate a relevant response.
The quality of your prompt directly affects the quality of the AI's output. Vague prompts get vague answers. Specific, well-structured prompts get useful results.
Be Specific: Instead of “write about dogs,” try “write a 200-word guide about training a golden retriever puppy to sit.”
Provide Context: Tell the AI who you are and what you need. “I'm a beginner cook. Explain how to make risotto in simple steps.”
Give Examples: Show the AI what you want. “Write product descriptions like this example: [your example]”
Assign a Role: “Act as a senior software engineer reviewing this code” often produces more expert-level responses.
Don't assume the AI knows what you're thinking. Don't use ambiguous terms without clarification. Don't expect perfect results from a single prompt—iteration is normal.
Prompt engineering is a skill that improves with practice. Start simple, observe what works, and refine your approach over time.
